Carolina Novac, state secretary of the Ministry of Energy, told a meeting of the parliamentary commission on economy, budget and finance.
“When we face crises, we cannot ignore the fact that we have a war on the border and we are interconnected, we are in one common block with Ukraine. And then the risks or, more precisely, the shocks that Ukraine is experiencing with regard to its electricity system are equally reflected in us. When Ukraine loses 5,400 megawatts of generating capacity, when 11 million consumers are disconnected and have access to electricity for 2 or 4 hours, of course, we are also affected by the instability of energy supplies,” Novac said.
She recalled the situation on January 31 this year, when there was a massive power outage in Moldova.
“We saw this also on January 31, when the electricity was in emergency mode because of the Ukrainian system, when the Vulcanesti-MGRES electric line failed and the protection was triggered. This happened also through the prism of the phenomena in Ukraine, attacks on the infrastructure – the infrastructure of generation, transmission, distribution and installed capacity, as well as on the line itself,” the state secretary of the ministry said.
The Vulcanesti-Chisinau line is almost ready
According to her, the MGRES-Vulcanesti line is “morally and physically worn out” and should be subjected to maintenance works.
In this context, the construction of the Vulcanesti-Chisinau line is of particular importance, she emphasized.
“It should be completed as soon as possible. The completion of this line is planned for the end of March. The reason for the blockages we are facing? First of all, let us realize the weather conditions – difficult conditions, when else have we had such a harsh winter?”, Novac said.
She said that the work is being carried out in an accelerated mode.
“The line was fully completed back by the beginning of December 2025, intensive works are also underway at the stations, the equipment – four transformers – has already been delivered to the station in Chisinau, and as soon as weather conditions allow, we will advance as much as possible in carrying out the works,” the state secretary of the energy ministry assured.
