Gagauzinfo reported that three options for the date of the elections and the behavior of the Gagauz authorities were discussed. The first was to hold the elections on June 21. The second – on September 20, in order to settle by that time all the legislative and political issues that have hindered the elections so far. And the third – not to set a date for the elections, in order to wait for Chisinau’s reaction to the election of the CEC of Gagauzia and then decide on further actions.
In the end, the deputies decided on the first option, taking into account that the powers of the current PAG members expired in November 2025 and the autonomy is practically in a situation of powerlessness.
The composition of the CEC was partially approved, but questions remain
Before the date of elections, the People’s Assembly at the same extraordinary session approved the personal composition of the CEC of Gagauzia. But whether it can be a legitimate body is still a big question. As it is known, the electoral process in Gagauzia has reached a deadlock because of disagreements between Comrat and Chisinau on the status and even the name of the electoral body. Gagauzia insists on retaining the former name of the Central Election Commission, while Chisinau demands that it be renamed the Central Election Council and subordinated to the Moldovan CEC.
The formation of the CEC (as it is still listed in the PAG documents) also remains a question mark. The deputies approved three representatives to the electoral body of the autonomy from the PAG and from the Executive Committee of Gagauzia, but the judicial bodies did not approve their representatives. Thus, it is premature to speak about the full-fledged formation of the CEC of the autonomy.
Besides, as it was noted at the PAG meeting, not all those approved to the CEC have qualification certificates to participate in the electoral process. But the acting speaker of the assembly, Nicolai Ormanzhi, said that the elections in the autonomy are held according to the legislation of Gagauzia, which does not have such requirements.
At the extraordinary meeting of PAG deputies there was also an appeal to the deputies to apply for participation in the joint parliamentary commission with the Moldovan Parliament on the harmonization of the legislation of Moldova and Gagauzia. So far, there are no representatives of the autonomy in this commission.
