At a meeting on September 3, the Cabinet approved the signing of a corresponding Grant Agreement with IBRD for the implementation of the project “Ecosystem Restoration for the Prevention of Marine Pollution” to be implemented between 2026 and 2030. The amount and procedure of grant financing have not been made public yet.
The project envisages restoration and protection of ecosystems in the Dniester River basin. It is planned to improve the condition of forest ecosystems on 1700 ha of public lands and 500 ha of community lands (reforestation, replacement of species, afforestation). It is also planned to protect rivers and wetlands on an area of 500 ha, develop agroforestry and forest pasture systems on an area of 10,000 ha, including a pilot project on an area of 100 ha, which will increase land productivity and reduce the risks of drought and erosion.
These measures will improve quality of life, protect forests and wetlands, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. The project will be implemented in the districts of Ocnita, Donduseni, Drochia, Soroca, Floresti, Soldanesti, Rezina, Teleneşti, Orhei, Criuleni, Ialoveni, Anenii Noi, Dubasari, Causeni and Stefan Voda.
The agreement also aims to reduce nutrient pollution in the Dniester basin, restore forest and aquatic ecosystems, increase resilience to climate change and involve local communities in the project implementation.
The main activities include restoration and treatment of forests along water bodies, rehabilitation through species replacement, creation of protective strips, afforestation, restoration of species populations and biodiversity enhancement.
The project will be implemented through the National Environmental Projects Office with support from the Global Environment Facility.
