At the beginning of 2026, there was a more active tendency of cash returns to the banking system than withdrawals. Cash inflows amounted to 13,079 million lei, withdrawals – 12,983 million lei (-3.1%). At the same time, no activity was observed in either case. The population and businesses did not seek to empty banks, but they were not eager to bring money there either.
Especially noticeable was the passivity of trade, which traditionally provides bank accounts with its sales. Revenue from the sale of consumer goods amounted to 7,458 million lei (57.0% of the total amount), which is 364 million lei (-4.7%) less than a year ago.
Receipts from payment of utility bills, taxes and fees, interest on loans and other sources of bank income also decreased. In January, 24.75 billion lei of new deposits were attracted. Of these, 32% were from individuals.
For comparison, in December 2025, the volume of new deposits amounted to about 5 billion lei (which at that time was also considered a significant increase of 40% compared to November).
At the end of January 2026, the total balance of deposits in the banking system amounted to 141.33 billion lei, up 0.5% compared to December 2025.
