The gymnasium is the only educational institution in the capital that provides full instruction in Ukrainian with compulsory study of Romanian, which makes it an important support for the educational integration of refugee children.

Due to the continuous increase in the number of refugee students, the opening of new classes is being discussed in order to ensure that all children have the opportunity for a full education. A meeting with development partners organized by the Ministry of Education and Research addressed the infrastructural needs of the school and the equipping of classrooms.

Assistance from partners

Representatives from UNHCR, the Ukrainian and Japanese Embassies, the National Congress of Ukrainians of Moldova, and several charitable and international organizations participated in the discussion.

They toured the school, identified rooms in need of repair and equipment, discussed with teachers the difficulties of teaching and the priority needs of the institution, and talked with students about the adaptation process.

Five new classes are expected to be opened for the new school year, one of them with integrated teaching in Romanian language. Fifteen applications from parents have already been submitted for it.

“Data shows that the number of refugee children enrolled in the Taras Shevchenko gymnasium. Taras Shevchenko Gymnasium continues to grow, which emphasizes the need to continue creating favorable conditions for their educational integration. It is important to join efforts with partners to promptly respond to the existing challenges,” said Ivan Duminica, Head of the Interethnic Relations Policy Service at the Ministry of Education and Research.
