The Women’s European Football Championship was held in Switzerland, the tournament became the 14th in history. For the second time in a row, the trophy was won by the English women, who defeated the Spanish women in the final in a penalty shootout. The tournament became a record in terms of prize money, attendance and TV audience interest, but despite the impressive investment, it became unprofitable. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) admits that it did not expect the women’s championship to perform as well as the men’s tournament, but intends to continue to invest in its promotion.
