The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), with support from UN Women, is developing statistics on women’s entrepreneurship, which currently has pilot status.
Initial findings indicate that the majority of women run enterprises in the service sector (44.3%) and wholesale and retail trade (44.1%). Women running enterprises are predominantly (33.9%) between the ages of 35 and 44 and between 45 and 54 (22.9%).
In absolute terms, the situation today is as follows: 66.2 thousand enterprises have a female person in management, 61.7 thousand enterprises have a female founder, and 66.4 thousand enterprises in the country combine both positions of female management. Counting of enterprises was made without taking into account state and municipal enterprises, joint-stock companies and enterprises founded by other legal entities.
In the European Union, these statistics are very important. Collecting data on the number of women heads of enterprises will help Moldova on its European path. These data help us to understand how we can use the potential of women entrepreneurs and this will have a positive impact on the development of the country’s economy,” emphasized Dominika Stojanosca, UN Women Representative in Moldova, at the presentation of the pilot data.
Subsequently, official statistics will develop datasets that will highlight the following aspects of women entrepreneurship: enterprise activity (turnover, number of employees, etc.); business demography (number of enterprises, speed of creation, speed of liquidation, etc.); export activity with goods; business climate, expectations and constraints of the business environment.
