“This path, while respecting all international norms, is the path we must take. <…> It is necessary to act in this direction so that we can start working. We are a state at the very edge of an armed conflict. We know what the attitude of the aggressive, imperial Russian Federation towards Poland is,” meduza.io quoted the Polish president as saying.
Karol Nawrocki said that he did not know whether it would happen at all, but supported strengthening Poland’s security “even with reliance on nuclear capabilities”.
In response to a question about Moscow’s possible actions if work on Poland’s nuclear program begins, Nawrocki said that “Russia could react aggressively to anything.”
Poland has repeatedly declared its readiness to at least deploy U.S. nuclear weapons on its territory. In particular, the country’s previous president Andrzej Duda put forward such a proposal in the spring of 2025. At that time, he called on the United States to move nuclear warheads to the territory of his country as a deterrent against Russian aggression.
Earlier, the Russian leadership repeatedly said that one of the reasons for the war in Ukraine was statements by its political elites about the need to restore the country’s military nuclear potential.
