According to the organization, 168 girls are among the victims. The school was struck while classes were in session. According to available information, most of the dead are schoolgirls aged between 7 and 12 years old. In addition, 12 other children were killed in other schools in five different regions of Iran.
“These casualties are a stark reminder of the brutality of war and violence against children, the effects of which reverberate through families and communities for generations. Children and schools are protected by international humanitarian law and must remain places of safety,” UNICEF said in a statement.
At least 20 schools and 10 hospitals have reportedly been damaged in Iran, disrupting children’s access to education and vital health services.
“UNICEF urges all parties to respect their obligations under international law and ensure the protection of civilians. In accordance with international humanitarian law, the lives and well-being of children must remain protected at all times,” the statement said.
UNICEF continues to closely monitor the situation and stands ready to support humanitarian efforts to assist children and families affected by the growing violence.
It should be noted that the UNICEF statement came on the 5th day after the strike on the Iranian girls’ school.
