From March 1, 2026, a fully digitalized urban transport network will be launched in Ungheni. The cost of the project is estimated at 24 million lei.

Ungheni switched to electronic payment for transportation: first 7 days free of charge

Before launching the project at the end of 2025, the municipality purchased a batch of 18 vehicles – 14 minibuses and 4 buses within the project “Development of integrated urban transport system in Ungheni municipality”, regional publication esp.md said.

The project is realized with financing from the National Fund for Regional and Local Development and includes the contribution of the fund and local authorities.

More than 30,000 residents of Ungheni and neighboring settlements will be able to use the new urban transport network, the newspaper said. The new buses and minibuses have electronic fare payment and routes can be monitored in real time.

The launch ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and the mayor of Ungheni municipality, Vitalie Vrabie.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development said that, for the first time, the transport in Ungheni operates on the basis of a fast, safe and cashless electronic payment system. At the same time, passengers have access to several payment methods: refillable transport card, special application eungheni-transport, SMS, bank card, etc.

According to the decision of local authorities, in the first 7 days after the launch, all passengers will ride free of charge to get used to the new payment methods and master the use of electronic tools.

It is also reported that the local authorities have built infrastructure for the operation of the transport: boxes for buses and minibuses, a car wash, an environmental waste water pit, a mechanical area and premises for the staff.
