The US is suspending “bombing and attacks on Iran” for two weeks after consultations with Pakistan on the condition that unimpeded passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz is ensured for the same period. This was announced on Tuesday, April 7, by US President Donald Trump on the social network Truth Social, writes dw.com.
In his statement, Trump referred to the request of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to “hold back the destructive power that was heading toward Iran tonight.” The White House chief also said that the reason for the US ceasefire is that “we have already met and exceeded all military objectives.”
According to Trump, work with Iran on a final agreement on long-term peace is also being productively conducted. “We have received a ten-point proposal from Iran and we believe it is a workable basis for negotiations. Almost all of the contentious points of the past have been negotiated between the U.S. and Iran, but a two-week period will allow for the finalization of the agreement.”
A U.S. administration official told The New York Times that U.S. military strikes on Iran have already stopped.
Israel will also join the cessation of strikes on Iran for two weeks, CNN reported, citing a White House official.
Tehran has reaffirmed its readiness for a truce
Tehran confirmed readiness for a truce, writes the state news agency Fars. The statement claims that Iran has won a “great victory” over the US by forcing Washington to accept its ten-point plan for a full-fledged end to the war instead of a short-term ceasefire. This plan Iran had earlier handed over to the US through Pakistan, among its points – lifting sanctions on the Islamic Republic and imposing fees for ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that within two weeks the Strait of Hormuz will be opened for safe passage of ships in coordination with the Iranian Armed Forces and subject to technical limitations.
U.S.-Iran talks will be held April 10 in Islamabad “with complete distrust of the American side,” Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said.
