The Ministry of Health presented such data on the occasion of World Food Day, which is celebrated on October 16. The ministry noted that overweight in Moldova is also among adolescents – 16% are overweight and 4% are obese. At the same time, 2.5 per cent of the Moldovan population face malnutrition, while 6.6 per cent of children under 5 are too short for their age.
To address these problems, the Ministry and the National Agency for Public Health are implementing nutritional measures: they aim to reduce the consumption of salt, sugar and trans fats and to promote a balanced diet. These actions are supported by the project “Healthy Life: Reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases”, funded by Switzerland. The project contributed to the development of a national plan on non-communicable diseases, the creation of a master’s program in nutrition at the N. Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and the establishment of a master’s program in nutrition at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy. This year’s World Food Day is organized under the theme “Hand in Hand for Safer Food and a Better Future”, a global call for joint action for a safe and sustainable food system.
The day also marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), which also reaffirms the right of everyone to safe and nutritious food.
