This issue was discussed during an online meeting between Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bol and Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Community and Territory Development Andriy Kashuba. The parties also considered options for the transit of Moldovan freight cars through Ukraine.
The Ukrainian side expressed interest in developing international rail transportation with Moldova, noting the need to take into account security conditions and economic factors.
“We are confident that the restoration of the Odessa-Chisinau train will contribute to the improvement of transportation accessibility and economic ties between our countries. At the same time, we must take into account all security risks,” Kashuba noted.
The parties also noted the need for a detailed analysis of the economic feasibility of restoring the connection. In particular, it is about the assessment of passenger traffic, the cost of using the infrastructure and possible tariffs for transportation, which will make it possible to take an informed decision on the launch of the route.
The second important issue was the resumption of the transit of Moldovan freight cars through Ukraine. The Ukrainian side confirmed the absence of any restrictions on their transit. Temporary difficulties in the exchange of technical information arose as a result of a large-scale cyberattack on the information systems of Ukrzaliznytsia JSC on March 23, 2025 and have already been eliminated.
The parties agreed to continue working on all issues and maintain close communication for the further development of rail traffic between Ukraine and Moldova.
The movement of the Chisinau-Odessa train was suspended by the decision of the Moldovan Commission for Emergency Situations from February 24, 2022 due to the situation in Ukraine.
