Anticipated areas of cooperation include education, agriculture, direct flights and more.
According to Moldovan Ambassador Ana Taban told the Hindustan Times, with an Indian company building a key power transmission line that will connect Moldova and Romania, the Moldovan government is seeking to attract more companies from the country in strategic sectors such as electronics, pharmaceuticals and construction.
The project to build a 158-kilometer overhead power line from Moldova’s capital Chisinau to the Romanian border has been awarded to India’s KEC International, reflecting the growing economic ties between the two sides, said Taban, Moldova’s first ambassador to India.
“This project is expected to be completed by the end of the year and we expect to attract more Indian companies in six strategic sectors – electronics, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, auto components, textiles and apparel, construction materials and food processing – that can receive state support under the investment program,” Taban said before wrapping up her work in New Delhi.
“Indian pharmaceutical companies can use Moldova as an export hub,” she said. – With Moldova planning to join the European Union by 2028, the country can be a good base for Indian companies.”
State aid in these six sectors can cover up to 60% of investments, plus a 75% income tax exemption.
Moldova is also developing ties with India in other sectors such as education, mobility and communication. The two sides are working on an air service agreement to open direct flights, and an agreement on mobility of skilled professionals is being negotiated, Taban said.
There are already 3,000 Indian students studying in Moldova and the government is offering annual scholarships for veterinary and engineering studies, while a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in education is being finalized.
Moldova is also interested in strengthening cooperation with India in agriculture, especially in the supply of agricultural products following the suspension of exports to Russia due to the fighting in Ukraine.
Taban recalled that a few months after Moldova opened its embassy in New Delhi in December 2024, the country received authorization to send the first batch of apples to India in March 2025.
“India represents a big market for Moldova and we can also buy more from India,” the Moldovan ambassador said.
