As the executive director of the National Association of Beekeepers of Moldova ANARM Ion Maxim notes, the share of acacia honey in the total production of this product in RM is not very large – usually within 10-20%. However, it is hundreds, and in the best years – up to one thousand tons of the product (in total, Moldovan beekeepers annually offer the market 3-5 thousand tons of honey of all varieties).
This year honey collection from acacia is likely to be only in some areas of the “codrus zone”. Prospects of the first honey collection – from acacia and rape – this year are weakened by the fact that not all beekeepers due to financial difficulties have provided proper (but expensive) feeding of bee families, not all of them are “in good working shape”.
Also not in favor of an active honey harvest from acacia is the fact that in the last two years the demand for honey in the European Union is not high due to high inventories of honey traders of Chinese and Ukrainian origin. In addition, the EU has tightened the quality regulations (amount of impurities of honey from other plants) in single-sort honey, in particular acacia honey. Accordingly, due to the risk of not meeting the European standards, the demand and price for acacia honey on the Moldovan market decreased by 10-15% last season.
