There are no tunnels, but the rules are already being put in place

Moldova plans to introduce European safety standards for road tunnels over 500 meters long. There are no such facilities in the country yet, but the bill has been drafted as part of the requirements of European Union integration and applies to tunnels in operation, under construction or in design.

The document prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development establishes uniform minimum requirements for the design, operation and control of such facilities. In particular, it provides for the mandatory presence of ventilation systems, lighting, emergency alarms and evacuation exits.

For example, in tunnels more than 3000 meters long and with traffic intensity of more than 2000 vehicles per one lane it is necessary to create a control center. Also, all tunnels must be provided with a water supply.

The law on minimum safety requirements for tunnels on public roads is to be considered by the government, after which it will be submitted to parliament for voting.

It should be noted that the longest tunnel on the territory of Moldova was the railway tunnel Cipala on the line Revaca – Cainari, which was 689 meters long. It was destroyed in 1944 during the retreat of the Romanian-German troops.
