At the end of 2024, there were 672,677 pensioners in the state social insurance system. Of these, 529,676 were recipients of old-age pensions, of which 128,331 were active pensioners. The average pension amounted to 3,983.85 lei during the year, which is 136.2 per cent of the subsistence minimum set for the first half of 2024. Such data are provided in the government report on the execution of the BHCS.
The total number of pensioners decreased last year, mainly due to the recipients of disability pensions (by about 3.4 thousand people). At the same time, the number of recipients of old-age pensions increased by 2,649 people. It was noted that among pensioners of all categories continue to work 174,731 people, which is 3,866 more than in the previous year. Thus, being contributors, they actually provide a part of their pension at the expense of contributions transferred by the employer.
A small number of pensioners (139,009, or about 26%) receive pensions significantly higher than the average size. While the majority of pensioners receive pensions below the average amount of 3,983.85 lei (390,667 or about 74%). This difference is also due to the existence of different categories of beneficiaries who have obtained the right to pension under favorable conditions (employees of banking institutions, civil servants, judges, prosecutors, etc.).
In 2024, expenditures on old-age pensions increased by more than 10% compared to 2023 due to the indexation of pensions by 6%, increase in the minimum pension, as well as revision of pensions for additional periods of labor experience.
