The government approved a new regulation on the payment of monthly scholarships to athletes for achievements in international competitions. From now on, the payments will also be accrued to young athletes aged 13 to 15, as well as to young medalists, whose age ranges from 21 to 23.
The amount of scholarships will depend on the level of competition and the result of a particular athlete. Thus, the amount of payment for the victory at the Olympic Games (regardless of the age) will be equal to five average salaries (80.5 thousand lei), while the youngest athletes will receive a scholarship of 1.5 average salaries (24.15 thousand lei) for the victory at the World Championship. The minimum scholarship amounts to 4,025 lei and is entitled to bronze medalists of the competitions among athletes up to 17 years old, silver or bronze medalists from 13 to 15 years old. More detailed information about the amount of payments is presented in the table below.
The state budget will allocate 59.133 million lei for the implementation of the project in 2026, which is 25 per cent more compared to the current year (47 million lei). The decision was taken after analyzing the performance of Moldovan sportspeople, who won a record number of awards – 731 medals of different merits in Olympic, Paralympic and other international competitions in 2024.
According to Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun, with this initiative, the government and the ministry he heads “reaffirm their commitment to supporting high-performing athletes and to creating a fair and transparent system of rewarding them for their results”.
Currently, the scholarships are only available to adult athletes and juniors between the ages of 16 and 20.
