New EU Entry Rules: EES Launches on April 10, 2026
English

The new EU entry rules will be in place as early as April

From April 10, 2026, the automated entry/exit system EES (Entry/Exit System) will be fully operational in the Schengen area, abolishing stamps in passports. Citizens of non-EU countries will now be asked for biometric data: face (photo) and fingerprints when crossing the border.

This is about the expansion and full functioning of the EES (Entry/Exit System), which is gradually replacing the usual stamps in passports with digital registration. The system has been implemented in phases since October 12, 2025. It is not related to the ETIAS visa authorization, which is expected later (at the end of 2026)

All entry and exit information is recorded digitally only. The biometrics procedure is mandatory for the first entry (photo + fingerprints), which may take longer at the border.

The system automatically tracks the legality of stay (no more than 90 days in 180 days). The new rules apply to non-EU nationals when entering the Schengen area (including countries such as Romania and Bulgaria). The coverage of the system includes almost all EU countries (except Ireland and Cyprus), as well as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

What to expect in the future?

The launch of the EES is a prerequisite for the implementation of the next phase, the ETIAS system, which is expected in the last quarter of 2026. ETIAS will already require citizens of “visa-free” countries (e.g. Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia) to obtain a paid electronic travel authorization in advance.
