The first Romanian standard gauge locomotive crossed the Prut River into Moldova

The Iasi Regional Railway Directorate said on Friday that the first test train on the European standard gauge 1435 mm gauge, namely an insulated diesel-electric locomotive, crossed the border with the Republic of Moldova via the Falciu (Romanian Railway, CFR) - Prut (Moldovan Railway, CFM) bridge to test the newly built standard gauge line on the Moldovan side, from the bridge over the Prut River to Prut station, Cantemir, Republic of Moldova.

“This technical run represents another preparatory stage for the completion and commissioning of the Zorleni – Falciu (RO) – Cantemir (MD) railroad. As a reminder, technical tests were conducted on this broad gauge railroad late last year using the isolated locomotive ChME3,” CFR reported. The successful tests in December 2025 were aimed at verifying the technical condition and functionality of the newly renovated section, including crossing the bridge over the Prut River.

The Cantemir-Felciu railway section, about 4 km long, has a strategic position on the border between Moldova and the European Union, and the resumption of railway traffic on this section becomes an alternative way of cargo transit in the context of diversification of export routes for Moldova.

“The Regional Division of Iasi Railways, together with CFM, continues its dedicated efforts to complete and put into operation the railway route Zorleni – Falciu (Romania) – Cantemir (Moldova), in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Romania and the Republic of Moldova in April 2025,” CFR SA reported.
