Bundestag building
The AfD deputies refer to the statements of President Maia Sandu and are interested in the position of the federal government, as well as in the legal assessment of Moldova’s possible membership in the EU and NATO in case of unification with Romania. In addition, the federal government should assess the impact of such a unification on the Transnistrian region.
The essence of the request
In particular, the deputies ask the following questions:
“1. Has the federal government developed its own position, and if so, what is it, on the possible unification of the Republic of Moldova with EU and NATO member Romania?
Has the federal government formed an opinion and/or requested legal advice (if yes, which one and what is its essence) regarding:
(a) Moldova’s possible membership of the EU, including the rights of its citizens, in particular the right to freedom of movement;
(b) the possible membership of the Republic of Moldova in NATO with its entire territory;
c) the status of the Transnistrian region, including EU and NATO membership issues, in case of unification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania?
Does the federal government directly or indirectly (e.g. through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit – GIZ) support non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the Republic of Moldova that advocate or actively promote unification with Romania?”.
Further procedure
The small inquiry (Kleine Anfrage) is the Bundestag’s official instrument of parliamentary control over the federal government. It allows MPs to demand information on specific issues in writing. Such requests are not discussed in plenary, but are published as official documents and allow parliamentarians, including the opposition, to receive comments and official positions from the federal government.
The request was initiated by AfD MPs Drs. Alice Weidel, Tino Hrupalla and members of the faction.
According to the procedure, the official deadline for a response is 14 days after the government receives the request, but the deadline can be extended if necessary.
The small inquiry was published in the Bundestag gazette on February 9, 2026.
