Teaching in the district’s schools is mainly in Russian, but already six educational institutions in the district have started to study non-linguistic subjects in Romanian and native languages as part of the implementation of multilingual education, notes regional publication tuk.md. However, some schools have not yet included such activities in their annual plans, and the Ministry of Education has presented new recommendations and requirements for further expansion of the multilingual model.
The publication specifies that in most of these schools, civic education and personal development are taught in the state language – about 70% of the teaching hours. Elective courses in Romanian in lyceum classes account for about 10%. In some institutions, lessons in physical education, technology, art and music education are taught in Romanian.
Some subjects in schools have also started to be taught in Bulgarian, the mother tongue of many pupils. It is especially actively used in music education lessons. There are also specialists from Bulgaria among the teachers.
In addition to the direct expansion of teaching in languages other than Russian, schools in the district are working with parents to promote the need for multilingualism in schools, holding seminars on this topic and developing their own multilingual education programs.
