Six Moldovan taekwondists won top medals, six won silver medals and ten athletes became bronze medalists. Two more medals were won in team competitions. The Moldovan team was second in the team pumseh (technical section) and third in the team sparring.
During the press conference, where the results of the national team’s performance were summarized, the president of the National Taekwondo Federation (GTF) Sergiu Balan said: “The decision to participate in the World Championships was not easy, given the complex political context in the Middle East. However, after much hesitation, the decision was made to attend one of the most important tournaments of the year.”
Moldova was represented by 25 athletes at the GTF World Taekwondo Championships. In total, more than 600 taekwondists from 25 countries took part in the tournament. The winner of the team standings was the national team of Russia, the second place was taken by athletes from Kyrgyzstan, the third place was reserved for Kazakhstan.
Taekwondo has been officially included in the Olympic Games program since 2000. The WTF – World Taekwondo Federation – has gained world recognition at the highest Olympic level.
