Thus, the economic entities of the sugar beet sector in Moldova probably managed to maintain the total area under sugar beet cultivation at last year’s level. However, it seems that they did not manage to ensure the expected by the management of sugar producing enterprises (according to the results of the contracting campaign of agricultural areas) the growth of sugar beet crops by 12%
It is also important to take into account that out of the total area of sugar beet plantations for the crop-2025 at least 5 thousand hectares had to be reseeded (with the same sugar beet) due to the death of crops as a result of spring frosts. That is, almost half of the current area of sugar beet plantations are late and therefore risky crops. Very favorable weather conditions and high professionalism of farmers are needed for the 2025 sugar beet harvest to be sufficient to produce enough sugar to meet the needs of the country’s domestic market in the coming marketing season.
According to the estimation of specialists of the Union of Sugar Producers of UPZM, the annual capacity of the Moldovan market, including Transnistria, is about 72 thousand tons (including right-bank RM – about 65 thousand tons). Processors produced only about 30 thousand tons of sugar last year from a relatively small sugar beet crop harvested under extreme drought conditions.
