Spatar: EU enlargement process should happen in waves

The European Union's enlargement process should take place in waves, says MP Marcel Spatar, chairman of the parliamentary commission for European integration. He emphasized that, apart from Moldova and Ukraine, the Western Balkan countries are showing significant progress in the accession negotiations.

“States’ preparations for accession should be harmonized so that expansions occur in waves. It is in the interest of the European Union that several countries join at the same time, as was the case with Romania and Bulgaria, and previously with other states, rather than one country at a time. This allows for a proper restructuring of the EU institutions, the Commission and the European Parliament,” Spatary explained during the press conference.

The MP emphasized that the pace of Moldova’s negotiations should be comparable to that of Ukraine.

“Moldova started negotiations together with Ukraine and it is natural to continue them at least at a comparable pace. We support Ukraine’s accession and Ukraine supports Moldova’s accession to the European Union,” Marcel Spatar said.

The press conference was held after a joint meeting of the specialized commissions of the Moldovan parliament and the Romanian Chamber of Deputies and Senate. The participants in the meeting discussed the exchange of experience in the European funds’ absorption.

“It is very important to ensure a high level of absorption of the funds provided by the European Union. Romania has considerable experience in this field, and we will continue the dialog in order to support a more efficient absorption of funds in Moldova,” the deputy added.

The conference was also attended by Romanian MPs Rodica Cusnir, chairwoman of the Commission for European Affairs of the Romanian Senate, and Mirela Furtuna, vice chairwoman of the Commission for European Affairs of the Chamber of Deputies.

Mirela Furtuna emphasized that “Romania is Moldova’s main supporter at the European level and firmly backs the EU accession process”.

In her opinion, Moldova is ready to open all the negotiation clusters and Romania will back their opening as soon as possible, based on the progress recognized by the European Commission.

According to the Romanian MPs, Moldova’s goal to complete the EU accession process in 2028 is an ambitious but realistic deadline.
