The horror movie entered nominations in all the major categories – Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, etc.
This is notable not only because the Academy often bypasses horror movies. But primarily because before Sinners, favorites received a maximum of 14 nominations. Only All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997) and La La Land (2016) achieved that.
One Battle After Another, Paul Thomas Anderson’s politically charged tragicomedy, came in second place in terms of nominations. The film received 13 nominations.
Both Sinners and One Battle After Another are Warner Bros. projects. Together they received 29 nominations, which was a huge success for the studio. It has 30 nominations in total, one of them for Amy Madigan in the Best Supporting Actress category for her brilliant campy villainess in Weapons, the best result in the studio’s 102-year history.
The 98th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 15, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles; Conan O’Brien will once again be the host.
