The work, published in the journal American Psychologist, was one of the most convincing pieces of evidence yet that emotionally colored speech affects productivity. The study was led by psychologist Richard Stevens, who has long studied the role of swearing in human behavior.
The scientists at Keele University focused on a condition known as “disinhibition”. It is characterized by a temporary weakening of internal control, thanks to which a person acts more freely, does not dwell on doubts and is less prone to excessive analysis. According to the authors, it is this state that helps to unlock potential and improve performance.
As part of the experiments, participants performed physical exercises, including repetitive lifting with hand support. Those who used swear words performed better than those who used neutral words. This suggests that this verbal response can increase engagement and concentration.
Additionally, the researchers analyzed factors that may influence the effect, including distraction, humor, confidence, and the so-called flow state. The combination of these elements was found to reduce internal barriers.
According to Stevens, in everyday life, people often limit themselves because of fear or insecurity. Swearing in this case can act as a simple psychological mechanism that allows you to move more quickly to action.
The authors of the work believe that the results may be useful in sports, rehabilitation and other areas where determination and overcoming psychological limitations are important. In the future, scientists plan to test how universal this effect is and whether it persists in different situations.
