
This allowed the company to promptly cover its financial obligations, reduce wage arrears and allocate funds for infrastructure rehabilitation. Such data is provided by the administration of the RRM.
According to the company, thanks to the adaptation of its business model with a focus on domestic transportation, especially of grain (growth from 20% to 80%), and the repair of critical sections of the railroad, it was possible to increase the average speed of trains from 15 to 40 km/h, thus improving the attractiveness of freight transportation.
According to Christian Jardin, a member of the Board of Directors of the RRM and advisor to the Prime Minister, the main income-generating activities of the company were the transportation of grain, crushed stone, etc., but it was the transportation of grain and crushed stone that generated the most revenue. An additional income of about 10 million lei monthly is expected after the resumption of freight transportation on the Valeni-Jurgiulesti section.
“Strengthening international partnership, flexible tariff policy, joint decisions on optimization of border points with Romania and participation in projects on modernization of railway infrastructure will also contribute to increasing transport capacities both nationally and internationally,” the RRM believes.
It notes that “a significant improvement in the financial situation was also possible thanks to the reduction of the number of employees from 5,900 to 3,700, which reduced the payroll from 43 million lei to 35 million lei per month.” During July-August 2025, wage arrears decreased from 7-8 months to 4 months. In August, LE 129 million was paid, including two to three salaries each at the main branches. Also, historical debts to the state budget and public utilities were restructured, 334 million lei was transferred to suppliers, and fuel arrears were reduced from 7-8 to 1 million lei.
The government allocated additional funds: 85 million lei – for the restoration of the Valeni section, 50 million lei – for the settlement of debts on salaries and social benefits, and 1,000 tons of diesel – from the state reserve.
Against this background, the results of the competition for the position of the General Director of the railway company were summed up – the winner was Serghei Cotelnic, a railroader since 2003 and holder of the title of “Honorary Railroader”.
