Romania has the highest inflation rate among EU countries

In December 2025, the annual inflation rate for the EU as a whole fell to 2.3%, but Romania's rate was unchanged from November and remains the highest in the EU at 8.6%, Logos Press reported.

Romania has the highest inflation rate among EU countries

Such data was published on January 19 by the Statistical Office of the EU (Eurostat).

According to the report, in December, the lowest annualized inflation was recorded in Cyprus (0.1%), France (0.7%) and Italy (1.2%). At the opposite end of the spectrum were Romania (8.6%), Slovakia (4.1%) and Estonia (4%).

Eurostat notes that compared to the situation in November 2025, annual inflation fell in 18 Member States, remained stable in three countries, including Romania (8.6%), and rose in six Member States.

In the euro area, the annual inflation rate fell to 1.9% in December, below the medium-term target set by the European Central Bank (ECB). Services made the largest contribution to the euro area’s annual inflation rate (1.54 percentage points), followed by food, alcohol and cigarettes (0.49 percentage points). At the same time, energy prices fell by 0.18 percentage points.

Earlier, the National Bank of Romania forecasted an inflation rate of 9.6% at the end of 2025. At the same time, the NBR expects consumer prices to rise by 3.7% in 2026.
