As the interlocutors of the publication note, distrust of Budapest has led to the fact that key discussions in Europe are increasingly taking place in small group formats: E3 (Germany, France, UK), E4 (E3 and Italy), Weimar Triangle (Germany, France, Poland), North-Baltic Eight and others.
“Generally less loyal member states are the main reason why most European diplomacy is now conducted in various small formats,” one of the newspaper’s interlocutors said. Hungarian officials denied the accusations.
The day before, Polish politicians published information that Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto allegedly regularly calls Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during breaks at EU meetings.
Hungarian officials, including Mr. Szijjártó himself, have denied the allegations. According to Politico, the EU leadership does not want to officially comment on this information so as not to affect the outcome of the parliamentary elections to be held on April 12.
