The Polish leader said this in his address on Thursday evening, European Pravda reported citing RMF 24. Nawrocki said he would not sign a law that affects Poland’s sovereignty, independence, economic and military security. He believes that the case has aroused a lot of emotions, “but the responsibility for the state is to look at the facts beyond the current politics. The SAFE case is a matter for the future of the Polish state.”

The Polish president believes that the SAFE program raised many questions from the beginning. One of the risks, he said, is that it is a huge loan taken in foreign currency. According to him, Poles will have to pay back twice as much, and Western banks and financial institutions will make money on it. “I warn that any attempts to illegally, through the back door, attract foreign loans for our country will sooner or later meet both political and legal responsibility,” the Polish president added.

What’s in return?

Karol Nawrocki noted that he presented “a real alternative to the SAFE euro loan”. “This is Poland’s SAFE 0%. This project is already in the Sejm,” the president reminded.

Donald Tusk’s government argues that Navrocki’s proposal is unworkable and will delay urgent military purchases. It also insists that the veto will only limit the application of the SAFE credit, not completely derail it.

Polls show that 53% of Poles believe that the president should approve the law on Poland’s participation in the SAFE program.
