Pilgrimage negotiations with Israel have stalled

As a reminder, Israel proposed a budget of 10 million shekels (50 million lei) to establish a temporary terminal in Moldova, through which Hasidim were expected to pass on their way to Rabbi Nachman’s grave in Uman on Rosh Hashanah. However, negotiations stalled after Moldova added two key demands.

They include immediate payment before the departure date, and the need to leave equipment purchased at Israel’s expense in the country after the event. These conditions complicate the implementation of the planned agreement and have raised concerns on the Israeli side, writes israelnationalnews.com.

Due to the difficulties in negotiations with Moldova, Israeli officials are considering expanding entry through Ukraine via alternative routes, primarily Romania. This route may require closer cooperation with Romanian and Ukrainian authorities.

Changing the route could affect the travel schedules and expenses of thousands of Hasidim planning to visit Uman for the Jewish New Year. Romania is seen as a more stable alternative, but the greater geographical distance may increase travel time and costs.

Rabbi Yaakov Young of Uman expressed regret over the logistical difficulties this would create for the worshippers. “Israel fulfilled its obligations and acted in good faith, but Moldova made additional demands and as a result the negotiations broke down,” he said.
