According to the National Bureau of Statistics, in the first half of the year, enterprises of railway, road, river and air transport transport carried 8.4 million tons of cargo, which is 4.9% less than in January-June 2024. Cargo turnover totaled 2,457.6 million ton-km, which is 10.5% less than in January-June 2024.

“There is nothing to carry. These results of transportation are due to the reduction in the volume of activity of the manufacturing sector, as well as the fall in exports. Incidentally, now 87% of cargo is transported by road and only 12% by rail. But this was not always the case. 15 years ago the proportion was 49% for 49%, and 20 years ago, i.e. in 2006, the bulk of cargo was transported by rail – 76%. In the same period of 2006, 5 million tons of cargo were transported on railway platforms, and now about 1 million tons. This is a question about the efficiency of railroad transportation,” says economist Volodymyr Golovatyuk.

Only the share of river transportation has increased in the structure of transported cargoes – during the analyzed period the growth by 8% both in terms of the volume of transported cargoes and the duration of transportation. In January-June 2025, the road transport registers a decrease in the volume of transported cargoes by 1.9% and cargo turnover by 8.5% compared to a year earlier. Road transport enterprises transported 7.3 million tons of cargo, of which 5.3 million tons in domestic traffic and 2 million tons in international traffic.

So far, transport companies are holding on thanks to the growth in the number of passengers transported (+16.2%) and passenger turnover (+17.5%). In January-June 2025, public transport carried 164.3 million passengers. Passenger turnover amounted to 3309.5 million passenger-km (+17.5%).

Such dynamics is due to the growth of passenger transportation by air (+34.0%), electric (+22.5%), river (+7.1%) and road (+5.9%) transport. At the same time, railroad transportation carried 41.8% fewer passengers than in January-June 2024.
