PAS is looking for a new candidate for prime minister

This was announced by Dorin Recean and Parliament Speaker and PAS leader Igor Grosu at a joint press conference.

“The faction and the entire PAS team had the special pleasure to cooperate very well with Mr. Prime Minister throughout this period. Our intention was to nominate Mr. Recean as prime minister, but he said that his mandate is coming to an end,” Grosu said.

Recean thanked the Action and Solidarity party for its trust and for the mandate of Moldova’s prime minister in a difficult period.

“The party, together with Maia Sandu, took on an extremely difficult task 10 years ago and started a path whose final outcome nobody knew, they just knew that they were fighting for justice. And even with many obstacles, with some mistakes, with dilemmas and huge challenges, PAS has kept its commitment with dignity,” said Dorin Recean.

He said he was honored by the intention to entrust him with the responsibility of premiership for the next political cycle, but his decision is different.

“My decision, my personal decision is different. Two and a half years ago I was asked for a clear task to take on the mandate of security and constitutional order. As before, I had no intention of being or staying in politics, so my mandate ends with the expiration of the current government. At the same time, our country is moving to a different stage of development. In the mandate of the current government, we managed to do together what was necessary for Moldova to take its place among the strong states of the world. And for this purpose, it is necessary that the next period of government be first of all about growth and economic development,” Dorin Recean said.

He specified that he will resign as soon as the new government is voted in:

“After that, I will return to the professional activity I left several years ago.”

As for a possible candidate for prime minister, Grosso said: “Please understand, I cannot name this person right now. The only thing I can say is that the Action and Solidarity Party will go in time to consult with Mrs. President, where it will present a candidate for the future prime minister.”

“What we want is for the government to be supported by a clear parliamentary majority, pro-European, this majority is represented by the PAS faction. And other parties, factions represented in Parliament will have the best opportunity and conditions to support Moldova and the government in the European integration process,” Igor Grosu said.

President Maia Sandu thanked Dorin Recean for the cooperation: “Prime Minister Dorin Recean, at this stage of Moldova’s development, was the most suitable person to lead the government and manage the state institutions, in order to pass through the numerous crises with dignity. Together with his team, he has made a significant contribution to strengthening the sustainability of state institutions and protecting democracy, promoting the EU accession process, ensuring energy security and implementing several important development programs for the country,” Maia Sandu wrote on social networks.

We shall remind you that on October 16, a session of the Constitutional Court will be held on the issue of confirming the results of the parliamentary elections on September 28, 2025 and validation of the mandates of elected deputies.

After that, the first session of the new Parliament will be convened by a decree of the head of state, and then the President will initiate consultations with the formed factions to appoint a candidate for the post of Prime Minister. The Parliament will then have to express confidence in the Government Program and the composition of the Cabinet of Ministers.

The current Government will remain in office until the new Cabinet takes office.
