Earlier, a group of opposition members of the Moldovan parliament sent an appeal to European institutions and international organizations, in which they drew attention to the need to restore constructive interaction between Chisinau and Comrat.
It was addressed to the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Petra Bair, the President of the Venice Commission Marta Cartabia, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe Michael O’Flaherty and the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Christoph Kamp.
Among the signatories of the appeal are representatives of all opposition factions of the parliament – Igor Dodon, Diana Caraman, Vasyle Costiuc, Alexandru Stoianoglo, Constantin Starish, Constantin Cuiumju, Renato Usatii, Elena Grytsko, Nicolae Margarint, Vlad Batrinchea.
Dialogue without pressure
“For more than three decades, Law No. 344 of 23.12.1994 on the special legal status of Gagauzia (Gagauz-Yeri) has been an internationally recognized example of peaceful and democratic settlement of ethno-political conflict through constitutional and legislative mechanisms. At present, however, we observe with concern the deterioration of relations between the central authorities and the Gagauz autonomy, including against the background of restrictive interpretations of the existing legal framework,” the appeal of opposition MPs to the European institutions says.
In the letter, the MPs welcomed the initiative to resume the activity of the joint working group between the Moldovan Parliament and the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia. But they reject any attempts of pressure and restrictive measures in this dialog.
“Undoubtedly, it is extremely important to resume a full-fledged and structured dialogue between Chisinau and Comrat, which should cover both current aspects, including the organization of electoral processes at the regional level, and strategic goals – the restoration of trust and a return to cooperation based on full respect for the constitutional and legal framework. The contribution of European institutions could contribute to the search for sustainable solutions in this direction,” the appeal says.
