OREM started registration of electricity market participants

This milestone marks an important step in the operation of OPEM-managed platforms aimed at ensuring transparency, efficiency and fair competition in the electricity market in Moldova.

The registration process is intended for all entities interested in participating in electricity trading on OPEM-administered markets. Detailed information on the registration procedure, required documents and application deadlines can be found on OPEM’s official website.

The establishment and commissioning of short-term electricity markets is necessary to ensure future interconnection with neighboring markets, and in particular with the Single European Day-Ahead and Intra-Daily Market (SDAC and SIDC).

According to the provisions of the Electricity Act, the electricity market consists of the bilateral contract market and organized electricity markets (namely the day-ahead market (PZU) and the intra-day market (PPZ), the balancing electricity market and the system services market.

In Moldova, 96 companies are licensed to supply electricity and only three suppliers currently operate in the competitive/unregulated market with market shares of 1.52, 0.14 and 0.34% respectively. After the launch of organized markets, the share of suppliers in the unregulated electricity market is expected to increase significantly.

Operatorul Pieței de Energie M SRL (OPEM), a subsidiary of SA OPCOM from Romania, was appointed as the electricity market operator in the Republic of Moldova by a government decision in early 2024.
