Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said his government may take additional action against Ukraine to force it to resume Russian oil supplies, which have been cut off to Hungary and Slovakia since January.
Speaking to reporters in Brussels a day after blocking a 90 billion euro loan to Kiev, Orban said he and his government had “a lot of cards in hand” beyond withholding the financial aid Ukraine needs to equip its armed forces and keep its economy running.
“We have other tools,” Orban was quoted by Euronews as saying. – 40% of Ukraine’s electricity supply goes through Hungary and we haven’t touched it yet.”
Orban insists that Ukraine is deliberately sabotaging the pipeline to create an energy crisis ahead of the tense April 12 elections and has promised to block all EU measures to help Kiev until supplies resume.
On Friday, Orban also threatened to veto the EU’s next seven-year budget if it included financial aid to Ukraine, adding:
“We hold a lot of cards, so I don’t think it’s worth picking a quarrel with Hungary.”
