Nikushor Dan: EU enlargement to Moldova, Ukraine and the Western Balkans is an investment in security

The statement was made at the high-level conference “Cohesion 2027+: driving long-term development, inclusive economic competitiveness and sustainability in Europe” organized in Bucharest.

“There are two words we will hear for a long time to come – economics and security. Economy – global competition has become much more intense, and security – because we also see that the rules-based international order is being challenged.

From an economic point of view there is a very simple rule: he who is small is less competitive than he who is big, and because of that Europe, the European economy has suffered, and we have all suffered a lot because we are still fragmented, and it is in our interest that the single market is consolidated, and because of that Europe’s economy will become more competitive, and therefore ours too,” Nikushore Dan said.

He noted that Romania supports the enlargement of the European Union.

“As far as security is concerned, obviously we are all responding to the need. This need is more acute on the eastern flank, and I welcome the Commission’s concern for the eastern flank. The last thing I want to say on security is that the enlargement of the European Union at the expense of Moldova, Ukraine and the Western Balkans is not charity but an investment in security. And Romania will support that. Obviously, all these countries need to meet certain standards set by the Union. For those countries that have the will and the desire, especially for the Republic of Moldova, that seek to join the European Union, Romania is an ardent supporter. We have a busy year ahead of us,” the Romanian head of state also said.
