The Lithuanian national team will be the first to test Lilian Popescu’s wards. The match will take place on March 26 at the “Zimbru” stadium in Chisinau. Then the “tricolor” will have to play away with the national team of Cyprus. The friendly will be held on March 30, the exact venue will be announced later.
The national team of Moldova has met with Lithuania eight times, winning two times. Four meetings ended in a draw, and two – with the Lithuanians’ victory. All matches had a friendly character. More than 12 years have passed since the previous sparring. In November 2013, the results of the match held at Zimbru did not reveal the winner (1:1).
The history of meetings with the Cypriot national team is much less intense – the rivals have met twice in friendlies. In 2011, the Cypriots defeated Moldova on their home field with a score of 3:2, in 2024, the “tricolor” defeated their opponent in Chisinau with the same score.
At the moment, the last official match of the national team of Moldova was a meeting with Israel (1:4), held in November 2025 at the stadium “Zimbru” within the European qualifying tournament for the World Cup-2026. In total, the national team played 10 matches last year, nine of which ended in defeats and one in an away draw in Estonia (1:1).
The Tricolor will play their next official match in September, when the UEFA Nations League 2026/27 begins. In 2024, the Moldovan national team, led by Serghei Clesenco, who retired last September, won the group tournament in Division D and secured promotion.
The opponents of the national team of Moldova in Division C of the Nations League will be determined on February 12 during the draw in Brussels (Belgium). Among the possible opponents are the national teams of Iceland, Albania, Montenegro, Finland, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Belarus. It is also possible to get into the same group with the upcoming opponent – Cyprus and the opponent of the last qualifying cycle – Estonia.
The top two teams in the Nations League will have the opportunity to compete for a place in the final tournament of the European Championship-2028 in Great Britain and Ireland, if they fail to achieve it in the qualifying tournament.
