The delegation included Democratic Party of the United States senators Jeanne Shaheen, Richard Blumenthal, Sheldon Whitehouse and Chris Coons. Two of them – Richard Blumenthal and Sheldon Whitehouse – arrived in Chisinau from Kiev.

According to the Moldovan head of state’s press service, the officials discussed bilateral cooperation, the situation in the region, as well as the country’s efforts to consolidate sustainability and advance on the European path.

“The interlocutors also discussed developments in Ukraine and emphasized the need to strengthen economic sanctions against Russia to stop the war,” the presidency said in a statement.

Separately, the delegation met with the head of the Cabinet of Ministers, Alexandru Munteanu. According to the prime minister’s press service, “the US senators noted Moldova’s significant progress in consolidating energy independence, increasing the country’s sustainability and strengthening state institutions.”

A day earlier, Senators Richard Blumenthal and Sheldon Whitehouse met with the Ukrainian president and members of his cabinet in Kiev and visited the Okhmatdet Children’s Hospital and a power plant.

At the meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky they discussed, among other things, sanctions against Russian Federation. The Ukrainian president said on social media that the Senate was now considering an important bill in this regard.

It should be noted that the senators insist on using frozen Russian assets and blocking the Russian “shadow fleet” to strengthen Ukraine’s defense and reconstruction.
