Canadian media, covering the event, dubbed the 214-centimeter native of Chisinau “the Moldovan hippo”. The Brantford Bulldogs’ choice in favor of the 17-year-old hockey player does not mean that Alexander Karmanov will spend the next season in this club. The athlete has the right to participate in several drafts and accept the most attractive, in his opinion, offer.
In May, the hockey player took part in the USHL draft, where he was selected by the Fargo Force (North Dakota), but decided to take part in another draft, already in Canada. “The Brantford Bulldogs, who selected Alexander, finished last season in first place in the Eastern Conference regular season, but lost to the Oshawa Generals in the conference semifinals 2-4 in a four-game series.
Karmanov spent the previous season on the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Knights junior varsity team and earned 33 points on a goal+pass system (15 goals and 18 assists). The team at the University of Pennsylvania, where the Moldovan athlete is a student, plays in the AYHL (Atlantic Junior Hockey League).
Alexandru Karmanov will turn 18 next year and then he will be able to participate in the draft of the main American league – NHL. If the hockey player is selected by one of the NHL clubs, he will become the highest player in its history. Slovakian defenseman Zdeno Hara, whose height at the time of playing in the NHL was 205 centimeters, is the tallest player in the history of the NHL.
