Moldova will not reduce excise taxes on fuel

Energy Minister Dorin Jungietu, in a video interview with ZDG, called "populism" the opposition's proposal to lower excise taxes on fuel at a time when oil prices are rising sharply in the world and on gasoline and diesel in Moldova.

Dorin Jungietu justified the need to maintain excise taxes by saying that “the authorities compensate the price increase through the existing mechanisms”, but did not say what mechanisms they were talking about.

He added that there is no need to reduce excise taxes, but that “money must circulate.”

“We have to proceed from the budgetary realities of the country,” he added.

Jungietu said that “instead of us consolidating and coming out with proactive measures, well thought out, we are being hit with populism and speculation – the crisis situation is not being exploited for the benefit of citizens,” and any measures should be well calculated and “based on the availability of our financial resources.”

Meanwhile, the Romanian government will hold a meeting today to discuss options for measures to reduce fuel prices in the country.

Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan said he had made two proposals: a reduction in VAT or a proportional reduction in fuel excise duty.

“This represents either a VAT reduction, which is currently applied in several European countries, but in Romania it is still an option, and the second is a proportional reduction of the excise duty with an extremely clear mechanism,” the minister explained.

Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolhogan announced that by the end of Monday the government will introduce a new package of measures to reduce fuel prices, most likely by reducing the excise duty.

Excise duties on gasoline and diesel fuel in Moldova have increased by 7% since January 1, 2026.
