As noted in the piece Radio MoldovaThe fish farmer relies on the naturalness and quality of his products, so the shelf life of his caviar is shorter than that of his competitors due to the absence of the most aggressive preservatives.
The producer said that he buys special feed in the Netherlands. In addition to two hangars for growing sturgeon fish, the third one is equipped for caviar production.
The entrepreneur notes that the caviar business is very risky and requires large investments. In addition, it is a very slow process – it can take up to 18 years to get the first batch of caviar.
In general, taking into account the sale of fish meat through stores inside Moldova and external supplies, the payback period of such a project takes up to 9-10 years. The producer plans to export not only to the European Union, but also to the USA and Arab countries.
It should be noted that in the Transnistrian region since 2006 the company Aquatir, part of the holding Sheriff, has been producing sturgeon fish (sterlet, bester, Russian sturgeon and beluga) and black caviar.
It took them six years from the launch of the first pool to getting caviar for sale. Only from 2022 to 2024 Aquatir exported 1210 kg of black caviar to the European Union. And the supply is growing: 218 kg in 2022; 381 kg in 2023; and 611 kg in 2024.
Caviar is sold at prices ranging from $300 to $1000 per kilogram.
