Moldova protects consumer rights in line with EU norms
Christina Ceban, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization, said this in her speech at an event to mark World Consumer Protection Day.
World Consumer Protection Day is celebrated annually on March 15. The date is intended to draw attention to consumer safety issues, increase citizens’ literacy and remind them of the rights legally recognized by the UN. Every year the holiday is held under a certain motto, focusing on current topics.
The theme for 2026 is “Safe Products, Confident Consumers”, which emphasizes the critical role of product safety in building citizens’ confidence in the marketplace and in the institutions that enforce consumer protection rules.
The event organized for this Day by the State Inspectorate for Supervision of Non-Food Products and Consumer Protection was attended by representatives of government agencies, business, civil society organizations and academia. It provided a platform for a dialog on current problems in the field of consumer protection and the need to strengthen market surveillance mechanisms.
Cristina Ceban highlighted the progress made in the process of modernizing the national regulatory framework, including through the adoption of legislation establishing basic safety standards for consumer goods that are in line with the European Union legislation on general product safety.
The Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization promotes policies aimed at strengthening consumer protection through cooperation between state authorities, the business environment and civil society, the ministry’s communiqué said.
World Consumer Protection Day is also a call for common responsibility for building a market based on trust, quality and respect for consumer rights in the Republic of Moldova.
