Moldova maintains its participation in CIS economic and social agreements for the time being
“The denunciation of the agreements and the CIS Charter is a natural step to achieve the strategic goal of European integration envisaged by the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova. The denunciation of these agreements will not have a negative impact on the business environment and will not affect the economy of the Republic of Moldova. The relations with the CIS member states in various fields will continue to be built on a bilateral and multilateral legal basis, and Moldova will remain a party to a string of CIS treaties, mainly in the trade, economic and social fields, as long as these treaties bring concrete benefits to the country’s citizens and correspond to the national interests,” Sergiu Mihov, state secretary of the Foreign Ministry, said at the government meeting.
The withdrawal from the CIS bodies will also lead to the refusal to participate in the formation of the CIS unified budget – Moldova’s share is about 3.1 million lei per year,” Mihov reminded.
Prime Minister Alexandru Muntean called the CIS agreements “atavism” and said that their denunciation “has long been expected by our whole society”.
“I believe that these are decisions that our society, the absolute majority of our citizens, have long expected. It was an atavism that we delayed for too long. We have studied everything, we have reviewed the legal part as well, and now we are ready to act. From an ethical point of view, taking into account all the facts of violation of norms that the Russian Federation has committed, we have all the rights and responsibility before society to terminate and denounce these agreements,” Prime Minister emphasized.
