Moldova – Israel: from export of labor force to joint projects

The construction business was one of the topics of discussion at the Moldovan-Israeli business forum, which took place on May 22, in Chisinau. Ronnie Brick, chairman of the Association of Entrepreneurs from Israel, said that so far there have been joint projects between Moldova and Israel in the construction and infrastructure sectors, which continue to this day. The workers for them were recruited directly in Moldova. Specialists in concrete and finishing works, as well as in laying tiles were in demand. When Mr. Brick arrived in Moldova this time, he met a Moldovan citizen who had worked in Israel for seven years. He showed him a photo of an apartment bought with money earned in this country.

Before the war, 120 thousand foreign workers were involved in construction there. At present there is a shortage of labor. To make up for it, the Government of Israel allowed to bring about 100 thousand foreign workers to be employed in construction. Therefore, one of the goals of the visit of the delegation of Israeli businessmen was to talk about this topic. The next day they were going to visit local construction sites to share their experience and get more information about what Israeli business might be interested in.

“Besides, we want to offer our friends in Israel to invest in construction and technologies in Moldova. Next time I hope to bring other companies in order to establish contacts between entrepreneurs for the emergence of joint projects,” said Ronnie Brick.

At the press conference, the Logos Press correspondent asked Vasile Tarlev, Chairman of the National Congress of Entrepreneurs and Industrialists of Moldova: “Since the guests are interested in attracting Moldovan workers to construction sites in Israel, while our construction sites lack qualified personnel, do you think that there is no contradiction with the interests of the domestic economy?” To which Mr. Tarlev replied, “Our citizens need high-paying jobs to support their families. There are examples of those fellow citizens who have worked or are working in Israel. They not only earn money there, but also get great experience. When they come back to Moldova, they will use it in our economy. We will create joint projects that will emphasize the use of high technologies applied in Israel. This will allow creating new jobs. The goal of the Moldovan-Israeli business forum is to identify the potential of the parties for joint projects in our countries”.

A Memorandum of Cooperation between the National Congress of Entrepreneurs and Industrialists of Moldova and the Association of Entrepreneurs of Israel was signed within the business forum. Later, a roadmap for the realization of these initiatives will be elaborated. According to the congress president, Moldova is able to become a platform for attracting investments, which will give jobs to people who did not leave Moldova and to those who want to return to their homeland.
