The Waste Management Feasibility Study is planned to be finalized by the end of 2026. This document should be one of the main elements in the implementation of the project “Municipal Solid Waste in the Republic of Moldova”. In this regard, sites for the construction of infrastructure have already been identified. Also the Terms of Reference for its design and construction will be developed.
The project covers eight regions. In region No. 1, which includes Cahul, Cantemir, Taraclia, Ceadir-Lunga, Vulcanesti districts and Comrat, a regional waste collection operator is already being created. The process of transferring the land for the realization of this project from the ownership of local authorities to the state is also underway.
Earlier, a grant agreement was signed for several districts (Ungheni, Nisporeni, Calarasi, Briceni, Ocnita, Edineti and Dondusan districts). The transfer of land into state ownership has already been finalized and a regional operator has been registered. The consulting company is preparing documentation for contracting and equipment procurement. Auctions will be launched in the second half of 2025.
A recycling and environmental management center will be built in each region, including sorting, composting and transshipment stations. The project also provides for the purchase of equipment and vehicles necessary for waste collection, transportation and processing, as well as closure of unauthorized dumps.
The project has a budget of 55.6 million lei. Its partners are the EIB, the EBRD and the Eastern European Energy Efficiency and Environmental Partnership (E5P) fund.
