Moldova became the third largest trading partner of the EU in terms of the volume of supplies of this commodity. In the ranking of barley suppliers, our country was surpassed only by Great Britain (532 thousand tons) and Ukraine (420,5 thousand tons)
According to the expert in agricultural marketing Iurie Rija, physical volumes of Moldovan barley supplies to the European market in the last two seasons remain relatively stable (116 thousand tons and 118 thousand tons respectively).
At the same time, the share of the Republic of Moldova in the total import of barley to the EU has increased – from 6.4% to 10.3%. However, the growth of the “Moldovan share” is due to the reduction of barley imports to the EU as a whole. Moreover, the decrease in supplies was mainly due to the leaders-exporters to the EU – Ukraine and Great Britain. By reducing their share, Moldova strengthened its position on the European market.
Overall, Moldova exported about 124 thousand tons of barley in the 2024-25 season. This is 22% less compared to the figure for the previous season 2023-24 (158.5 thousand tons).
In financial terms, Moldovan barley exports last season amounted to 407.8 million lei. The average export price amounted to 3.29 lei/kg, which is higher than in the previous season (3.06 lei/kg). However, it is significantly lower than the record high of 5.26 lei/kg on average (2022-23 season).
