
The initiative involves amendments to the Law on Approval of the Combined Commodity Nomenclature. If the document is finally adopted, duties will remain in place only for certain sensitive categories of agricultural products – beef, pork, poultry meat, milk and dairy products, as well as sugar and sugar-containing products. It is noted that imports of these goods are insignificant.
“This project does not offer only unilateral benefits, but also opens the door to a more favorable trade regime. However, even in this case we are not talking about ‘humiliation’ – in economic science this is called asymmetric trade regime,” said the author of the project Adrian Belucel.
The Alternativa bloc intends to propose an amendment to include sunflower oil in the list of exemptions as well.
According to the data provided in the explanatory note, the trade imbalance between Moldova and the United States has increased in recent years. In 2025, exports amounted to 49.7 million dollars, while imports reached 195.1 million dollars. The negative trade balance amounted to 145.4 million dollars.
In comparison, in 2024 the deficit was $45 million and in 2023 it was $61.4 million. The import-export coverage rate fell from 66.7% in 2024 to 25.4% in 2025.
The authors of the initiative believe that the elimination of duties on a wide list of goods will facilitate access to equipment, technology and products with high added value, including industrial and medical equipment, and will contribute to the modernization of the economy.
The press reported that PAS MPs Adrian Belucel, Andrian Keptanaru and Radu Marian might visit the USA in the near future. No official statements from them on this matter have been received yet.
