Moldova implements IDELA tool to assess early childhood development

Approximately 2,000 pre-kindergarten children will be included in a comprehensive early childhood development assessment program. The results of the national assessment will be presented in April and May, and final data will be available at the end of June, according to the Ministry of Education and Research.

The Ministry specifies that the assessment will be carried out using the International Developmental Evaluation Tool for Early Childhood (IDELA), which is widely used internationally. In this context, the Ministry, in partnership with UNICEF, Save the Children International and iData, announced on 24 March a training workshop for the first trainers who will apply the tool at the national level.

The implementation of IDELA aims not only to assess the developmental level of children before they enter school, but also to support the process of revising the Early Learning Development Standards (ELDS) to ensure that every child gets the best possible start in life, the ministry said.

Adaptable to different cultural and economic contexts, IDELA combines methodological rigor with flexibility of application, enabling the collection of relevant and internationally comparable data. At the same time, it contributes to strengthening national capacities in early childhood education.

With this tool, professionals can assess children’s basic skills – from early language and math development to social-emotional and motor development – in a friendly and playful way. At the same time, IDELA makes it easier to identify gaps, monitor progress, and evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs.

Twelve trainers are participating in the training organized by the ministry and will later be tasked with training 40 evaluators at the national level. Over the next few days, they will delve into key areas of child development, apply the IDELA tool in real-life settings, and calibrate assessment methods to ensure accurate and comparable results.
